How Women Trump Men In Terms Of Leadership Skills
"A new survey has discovered that women are more suited to leadership roles than men, with far more attributes suited to high-powered roles than their male counterparts. However, in spite of having the skills, women are still side-lined for many positions due to a lack of confidence and leadership experience. KEY ATTRIBUTES


Executive search firm Korn Ferry recently conducted research that demonstrated the female of the species holds more of the key attributes needed to succeed in leadership roles. Aspects such as social knowledge, team-building and customer satisfaction were all present far more frequently in women. In spite of the information gained through this research, it appears as though women are still being overlooked regarding promotions and interviews for top job roles. In a society that claims gender separation as thing of the past, why are only 16.9% of Fortune 500 boards populated by women?

THE PROBLEM


Unfortunately, it appears as though experience is the main issue holding women back from positions of power within business. The research found that many women either do not accept or are not offered positions that can give them the relevant experience to carry on moving up the career ladder.

THE SOLUTION


Confidence seems to be an issue in this situation; men spend their mid-level career points actively seeking out chances to exceed expectation and gain experience within more demanding areas of business. However, women who are 'power hungry' or driven by desire to become a leader, often find themselves judged on their lack of femininity.

The issue of gender equality is one still hotly debated, and actress Emma Watson's recent speech to the UN has prompted even further discussion. She said as a child, she was accused of being bossy, when in fact she felt it was simply a confidence in her abilities. With such a small number of women on Fortune 500 boards, it does appear that the issue is still rife. However, with research showing that women are more capable than their male counterparts of achieving success in positions of leadership, it means more offers need to both be made and accepted if the situation is to change.
